Podcast Episodes discussing the 2016 DAO Attack
The 2016 DAO attack is one of the most infamous hacks that ever took place in the crypto industry. The hack was the result of a vulnerability that allowed for a recursive call (or re-entrancy) attack.
How did The DAO hack happen?
The source code for the DAO’s smart contract had a poor sequence of commands that set the state of the balance after a transaction was sent. This allowed the attacker (who has since been doxxed by Unchained founder Laura Shin) to withdraw a balance over and over again in an infinite loop. The event was documented in detail in Laura’s book, “The Cryptopians” and is discussed at length in the following podcast episodes and newsletters.
